Even if you don't know your way around a balance sheet, these powerful computer programs will give you the proper framework to track your own paperwork and streamline all of your recordkeeping.
What will it cost? When starting up, companies can expect to spend between $1000 and $1500 on entry-level computer software for small business applications, excluding basic computer costs. These costs can be roughly broken down into the following: $150-$300 for the program, $100-$150 for forms, $300-$400 for Peachtree training classes, and $450-$750 for installation and setup. Remember: you can greatly reduce these expenses if you are already accounting software literate or are fairly comfortable operating a computer.
What else do I need to know? Most accounting software is updated annually. You should budget at least $200-400 for annual updates and about $200 more if you need payroll table updates. Also, you will find it is best if you plan now to have an annual review of your system by one of JCS's specialists for roughly $400-$700.
What are the major mistakes made in working with accounting software? The biggest problems JCS sees time and again are businesses working with systems that have been incorrectly installed and are operating without proper backups for important system files. Whenever you discover corrupted or damaged files (meaning you cannot read your own accounting data), this hints at network or computer issues that were not correctly addressed when your software was initially installed. At JCS we encourage our customers to ensure that their programs are installed correctly, make backups sets regularly, and use UPS battery backups to ensure system integrity.

Peachtree First Accounting - (Under $79) This is a good low-price accounting option for general ledger, accounts receivable, and accounts payable features. There are no bells and whistles, but the downside is that you may not be able to upgrade easily. If you can afford it, you should consider Peachtree Complete (see below).
Peachtree Complete Accounting for Windows - (Under $160 single user) An excellent entry-level program with extensive record-keeping abilities, including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, inventory, sales orders and invoicing, purchase orders, job costing, and bank reconciliation features. Customizable forms and extensive capabilities included. This is a great product until transaction volume is large. You may want to consider a dedicated server for file sharing.
Peachtree Complete Premium - (Under $799 maximum users) If your business needs to track time and reimbursable expenses by job or customer, then this is the program for you. Using the activities feature you can track time for each employee. These time allocations will be sent directly to payroll and indexed by job or customer. If you need to be reimbursed for travel or expenses, assign them appropriately and automatically attach them to invoices as is or mark them up. This package includes all of the features mentioned above as well as the benefits time allocations. Dedicated servers are preferable.
